How to live comfortably in a modern tipi

Tipi living

Firstly – a little rant…

‘Who is living there?!’

DON’T PANIC! – It’s incredible how many people have stood at my gate and passed judgement on me based purely on seeing my field overgrown, OR cut-back; a van parked in the paddock, a tent erected or… heavens above… a bl**dy tipi!

No, no, no… I am not planning a commune, nor am I ‘trying to get planning permission’ to build on the land by establishing some tenuous presence there, nor do I have any other motive for being there apart from wanting to enjoy the land I have owned for 20 years now that I have time to do so.

Panic not. No, nobody is living there.

At last, I actually heard someone at the gate a few days ago, say to their companion, ‘It just goes to show what you can achieve by tackling a little bit at a time…’ She was referring to the fact that by comparison with how the land has been apparently neglected for years, changes – dare I say ‘improvements’ – are evident as work continues, a very little at a time, to actively manage the land.

Whilst I was away it was indeed left overgrown. I had several motives for that; all to do with either money or – the main beneficiaries – the wildlife.

Well, now that I can – Covid restrictions permitting – I will be hanging out with the wildlife as much as I can and, for the busy-bodies, I would like to point out that my presence will be well within any other restrictions that apply specifically to land-use. My contact details are clearly available so please do contact me to discuss any concerns you have. My activities in looking after the land, vegetation and wildlife, and engaging in a permaculture approach to growing food I can share are now my main employ so you can expect to see me there quite a bit.

My tipi

Apart from my van, one of my most favourite things in the whole world is the humble tipi.

Here, I’ll be writing about my tipis and what I love about ‘tipi living’. Bookmark this page and come back often. Better still, sign up to my newsletter and I’ll make sure you are kept up to date with what’s afoot at Fishleigh Cross.

A note about security.

And when I am not obviously visible it doesn’t mean I am not there – There are numerous cameras sited around the entire site which are monitored 24/7 via wifi link. These, and other security measures on site are purely to protect my interests there, record wildlife activity and NOT to compromise anyone else’s rights to privacy. I am GDPR compliant and use video ‘masking’ to exclude images of anything other than anything that comes within a metre of the perimeter of the property. BUT woe betide anyone who trespasses.
